Synopsis for "Rules of the Game"
Mercy wakes up from a nightmare in which she recreates the encounter with Hilts in the Wastelands and is killed by the assassin. She's had those dreams constantly since the encounter, but she knows it's part of being a trekker. Shortly afterwards, she is visited by Paul, the police officer with whom she had a relationship. Paul invites Mercy on a tour to space, but she tells him that she'll have to think about it.
Elsewhere, Lt. Alex Sinclair learns of the murder of Councilman Velander, a notorious high-society criminal of New Gelaph and he is sure that him and his team will have lots of restrictions from their corrupt superiors in order to investigate the murder. For this, Alex contacts Mercy and tells her to track down the killer.
Mercy, who is not used to do detective work in order to find an unknown killer, has to use all her underworld contacts to learn some information about the possible location of the killer. Unfortunately, on her first attempt to nail the possible murderer, she is interrupted by another Trekker called Roger Vincent, who is also after the killer. Their struggle allows the suspects to flee, leaving only two very frustrated Trekkers.
Thanks to her uncle and her contacts, Mercy finds a new lead, but the situation repeats all over again when Vincent shows up at the scene and they can't find the killer. Vincent suggests working together, but initally, Mercy refuses. However, she changes her mind when Vincent saves her from an ambush in which she would've been killed and she agrees to work with him, although reluctantly, and split the bounty.
Mercy's contacts provide them with another lead and they go to the place. However, they are discovered by the criminals and in the ensuing struggle, Vincent disappears. After taking down most of the thugs, Mercy deduces that Gatefish is behind the crime and she storms one of his known hideouts, where she is attacked by a professional assassin, but she manages to defeat him and take him back to the police. Unfortunately, by the time she gets there, her uncle informs her that Vincent had already delivered the real killer and claimed the whole bounty for himself, before leaving in a hurry towards Gamma 7.
Frustrated, Mercy goes back home, where she remembers an earlier conversation with Molly about going out and knowing other places outside of New Gelaph. Finally, Mercy calls Paul and tells him that she will go with him on the tour, but her real motivation is the fact that the space tour will take her close to Gamma 7.
