Synopsis for "The Day the Eiffel Tower Went Berserk"
One day in the mid-20th century at 9:38 p.m., the same instant "Tusslin Tom" Gurney defeats the space squid from Rigel X-9, forty-three children are suddenly born to women who had shown no prior signs of pregnancy and the ones who survived were either abandoned or put up for adoption. Eccentric billionaire and scientist Sir Reginald Hargreeves found and adopted seven of the babies and promptly wiped their identities, assigning them numerical designations instead of names. Claiming this was "to save the world", he locks them and himself inside a private academy just outside the City for years.
Ten years later, the Eiffel Tower in Paris seemingly comes to life, thrashing about and firing upon the city with laser beams. Five of the seven members of the Umbrella Academy, with Number Seven apparently having no powers and Number Five having run away, make their public debut as a superhero team by battling the Tower, led in the field by Number One. The team discover the Tower is being operated by its creator, zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel. Number Two throws a knife at Eiffel's head, and accidentally sets off a sequence in the Tower that launches it into space as the children escape. Afterwards, the six children receive the key to the city and a scoop of ice cream each.
Twenty years later, Number One is seen on the moon, having undergone an experimental, life-saving procedure to make graft his head onto the body of a Martian ape, and is now known as Spaceboy. He is summoned back to the Academy by his father's chimpanzee associate Dr. Phinneus Pogo, who informs him that Reginald has died. Upon returning, Spaceboy is greeted by long-lost Number Five, who tells him an apocalyptic threat is coming their way and that they need to prepare.
NotesEdit
- The exact year the forty-three children are born is never stated, but given the Academy members were ten years old during their first superhero mission, and the fact that they are seen to be thirteen around 1963,[1] it seems they were born sometime around 1950.
